DBS Application - Fees Follow
Volunteer
For Volunteers, DBS checks are free. You can subscribe to DBS the Update Service once your certificate has been issued and we will guide you through the registration process. The service is also free for Volunteers though you may opt out of this.
Paid
If you are in Paid role, your DBS application will cost £49.50 and you will pay this fee at the end of the application process before the application is dispatched to the Disclosure and Barring Service for checks.
Registering your certificate with the Update Service will cost £16 per year.
Once your certificate is issued, you will receive a notification email and be invited back into the system to join the Update Service. This needs to be done within 30 days.
The DBS charge £16 per year to maintain your subscription to the Update Service in order to renew the certificate and clearance for a further 12 months. If you elect not to register then your certificate will only be valid for the statutory 12 months clearance period from the date issued and if you were to continue in your role after this time, you would need to make a new application at the cost of £49.50.
To pay, the applicant should click the link in the email, or log into their applicant account on the ECB Disclosures Portal and follow the instructions to pay.
The rules around whether or not someone is a Volunteer are not the ECB's but outlined by HMRC’s. There is no requirement to hold a separate DBS for multiple roles – the same DBS covers Paid and Voluntary roles.

The fee for the DBS (if someone has to pay for it) is deductible against taxes if someone is earning money from the role that requires it, for example, professional coaches.
